The East Africa Women's League was started in Nairobi in 1917, its main
concern being the welfare of women and children of all races in the country
then known as 'British East Africa'.
Then in 1943 Lady Baden-Powell (Olave) started the England branch of
the EAWL which was followed in 1944 by Lady Stratheden starting the Scotland
Branch.
In 1975 these branches became the EAWL(UK), the objects being to relieve
poverty, sickness and distress to residents and ex-residents of East Africa
of United Kingdom origin who are in necessitous circumstances.
The EAWL(UK) became a Registered Charity in 1986.
